The paper uses the data in the confidentialised unit record file from the Department of Family and Community Services’ (FaCS) Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey, which is managed by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. The findings and views reported in the paper, however, are those of the authors and should not be attributed to either FaCS or the Melbourne Institute. The authors also thank Diana Warren and Simon Freidin for research assistance and Marion Kohler and her colleagues at the Reserve Bank of Australia for their work in deriving imputed values for missing cases.
